- That day I shouldered my painting bag and walked into the outskirts, startled by a broken bridge—was this indeed the Broken Bridge? I had walked into the realm of a novel, spread paper and seized it, and even forgot the hour of meals. Returning, I was glad to have it examined and criticized by my companions. After that I waded chest-deep and made another picture. 7 August 1956, on the way to Mount Huang, halted at Shexian, unable to go on, so I ambushed this scene and took it into my painting bag as private property.
