(Close-up.) Some who study painting know only how to paint the figure and not the folds of dress, treating drapery as easy, glancing over it as if beneath their effort. They little know how important the folds are. If the folds are not well painted, the figure cannot be well painted either. In drawing cloth, line is of first importance; the clarity of the grain is all in the line. If the line is not fluent, the grain is confused; once the grain is confused, cloth is not cloth but stone. The brush should be both soft and firm: too hard and it is like paper, too soft and it becomes rotten floss—neither is true. Light and dark tones must all be transparent; muddiness is to be strictly avoided. Attend also to the relation of void and solid: the darks should not be too solid, nor too fussy. Use white only at the most crucial points; never scatter it everywhere. Jianhou
