Commune women washing rice. “Washing rice” is not truly washing with water, but beating the threshed ears, or those still with grain, with a bamboo switch so that all falls off—one might call it work to get every grain into the granary. I had not only never seen this scene; I had never even heard the term. This was the first time it came before the lens; I found it strange and painted it. Jianhou
